A Twist of Fate

A Twist of Fate is a short, experimental film I created for NMD 104 which has a maximum length of 90 seconds. It tells the story of a girl who is given the rare once in life time chance of a “portal” but just as the flame of hope is ignited, it is extinguished as she fails to make it in time. Created mainly as an exercise in the use of Adobe Premier, Adobe Aftereffects and filming (both in regards to planning for and actually using a DSLR). This was one of my only times filming and editing a “movie” styled piece and the process provided significant insight into the way production happens from both a technical and workflow related viewpoint.

I struggled significantly with the use of the DSLR, especially in regards to getting a good picture while filming at night. These troubles where compounded by issues that you wouldn’t think about when making films–it was freezing cold and using the camera became difficult and the tripod didn’t exactly move as smoothly as it should have at 0 degrees.

You can view the rough documentation I created before filming below, which helped immensely during filming, though I still grabbed additional shots while on site that ended up making it into the final version. The final edit also ended up using significantly more cuts.
