My interests span a huge gamut of different disciplines and many different aspects of New Media, however the overarching theme is that of inspiring amusement. Entertainment tends to be the first thing on my mind when creating any work, the first question I will ask my self is “Is this interesting?” followed by “Is this entertaining?” and maybe eventually “Is this useful?”. To the end, all of my work tends toward the playful or dramatic. There is often a lot of hidden complexity behind my pieces because it stands to reason I should follow my own philosophy of seeing “bad ideas executed well.” I enjoy coding, so many of my projects are highly code oriented and I often seek to code in a way that creates opportunities for people to engage that are unique. In “Chaotic Creatures” the user interaction is actually abstracted away from the person performing it. It responds to something but the user is never made explicitly aware. Exploring these types of implicit interactions and ramifications it could have on user experience as a whole is something I’m extremely passionate about.
In terms of New Media strategies, much of my work seeks to garner a reaction in the way someone interacts with it. That said, I focus more toward Leveraging, Crowdsourcing, and Visualizing than other New Media strategies. Brave New Maine is probably the culmination of this focus, it combines interaction design with crowdsourcing and local stories. It attempts to engage with people on a personal level and tell their stories, but also asks them to imagine the future. The Kinectibytes project was created with the interaction as a focus, and the unique experiences people get from novel ways of playing are the end goal. Most everything I do is an experiment in engagement.
