Fire Emblem: Awakening Interactive iPad App

This was created as my final project for Design Basics for New Media. It’s an interactive iPad App which is serving as a review for the (amazing) 3DS game Fire Emblem: Awakening. This project was culmination of the all skills learned throughout NMD 104. It involved heavy use of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign as well as elements of web and print design that we discussed all semester within the course.

The project is briefly explored in the above video. What is not apparent is the project includes sound elements (particularly on the Audio page) and gestures that are difficult to do with a mouse in preview– they work much more smoothly on the iPad. In terms of interaction there are a number of different interactive elements in app, but they are all denoted by simple and consistent “interaction icons”. There is also a short primer “one time view” object that shows a short and simple help message for each type of interaction in the app.

I tried to seamlessly combine disparate elements of print and web design, outwardly it appears very magazine like, but those elements are interactive or changing. There are swapping text highlights, embedded videos, slideshows, previewable music. There is also supplemental information integrated into the imagery throughout the entire piece, every character image has a short Bio that is just a tap away. Rating boxes have breakdowns hidden on drag handles on top of them. In addition, there are multiple ways to navigate from page to page. There are single tap buttons on the bottom of each page, a draggable navigation menu which allows you to jump to any page within the content, and the swipe gesture (vertical to scroll through the article, and horizontal to move between articles). I wanted to give the user full freedom to explore the content anyway they chose.
