This is an essay I wrote for Existentialism and Literature, which argues in favor of Bachelard’s idea from The Poetics of Space that “space offers stability but also the illusion of stability”. It touches are some of the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, particularly that in Being and Nothingness. It illustrates this through the story told in Virginia Woolfs’ novel To The Lighthouse.
